Welcome

This summer, I will be in Cape Town doing research for my doctoral thesis in religion, focusing on how forgiveness is understood in post-apartheid South Africa. I will also be working on programming for the Lyndi Fourie Foundation.

This trip is made possible by a research grant from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Vanderbilt University. I am ever grateful for the opportunity to travel to South Africa and finally wander the land of the world's good hope.

The Cape of Good Hope, the most south-westerly point in Africa.

A 1703 map of the Cape of Good Hope (Cabo da Boa Esperança). It was first named the Cape of Storms by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 because of the raging seas he encountered there. Later, King John II of Portugal changed the name to the Cape of Good Hope because of the great optimism inspired by the opening of a sea route to India and eastern regions. Cape Town is named for this important nautical landmark.
