With 2.95 million people, Cape Town is the third most populous city in South Africa after Durban and Johannesburg. Not much is known about the residents of the region before the earliest recorded mentions of the Cape of Good Hope by European explorers seeking a trade route to India in the late fifteenth century. The capital of South Africa is Pretoria. Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa, and was the site of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission established in 1995 after the dismantling of the apartheid government.
